Born in Milan, and with an interest in Eastern philosophy that led her to study in Tibet, Francesca Sfondrini's passions took her all over the world, and then finally back to Tuscany's upper Maremma, where in 2009 she took over the farm from her mother's husband, Fabrizio Niccolaini, and revitalized the winemaking with her very soulful approach. The farm is polycultural, and they produce wines, olive oils, and grains.
The wines of Massa Vecchia consistently delight, and this 'Rosato' was particularly enticing at a recent tasting. As a blend of merlot, malvasia nero, and cabernet sauvignon, the 'Rosato' has a bold, dark, presence, and yet a lightness of being. The blend changes based on the year, as the young estate (founded in 1985) still learns the particulars of their plots and vines. Massa Vecchia's stated goal is to have their Rosato be a wine that is easy to drink, but powerful.
